But how does it work? One thing is for sure: Discarded electrical appliances do not belong in household waste. This also applies to small and micro appliances. Because even if your electric toothbrush, your razor, or your fur baby’s flashing LED collar no longer works, there are still many valuable raw materials inside these items that can be put back into the cycle with proper recycling. Therefore, it is important that you return broken devices at the designated drop-off points. You can drop them off at specialist or retail shops at no additional cost – or you can bring them to one of the over 750 collection points that are connected to the SENS network.

Three reasons to join

Firstly, you make sure any hazardous substances contained in the appliances are cleanly separated and disposed of safely in line with the highest quality standards. These hazardous substances include mercury, PCBs, refrigerants and heavy metals. Although substances that are harmful to health and the environment, such as PCBs or hydrofluorocarbons, have been banned for some time, they are still present in old appliances. Secondly, you help to save resources and recover valuable raw materials that can be reused – and, doing so, you help to close the material cycle in the best possible way. The proportion of recyclable materials in electronic waste is substantial – 75% on average. These are mainly metals such as iron, steel, copper and aluminium, various technical plastics and glass, but also precious metals such as silver and gold. Not least, critical raw materials, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, can also be reintroduced into the cycle through proper eRecycling.
